Every orthodontic patient hears about the “Food List” when they get their braces on. The ChapmanSmiles team gives every patient a:

The “Food List” is a list of items you should avoid while wearing braces. Any hard candy, sticky candy, chewy candy, raw carrots, corn on the cob, (the list is long and distinguished) must not be chewed on as they shear off the braces from your teeth.
As a consequence, the disconnected teeth (and their neighbors) are not moving in the right direction in the time frame as prescribed. You wear your braces longer. We have found that each broken brace adds as little as 4 weeks and as much as 6 months to your orthodontic treatment depending upon the circumstances and how far along your treatment is. They can also increase the number of office visits required to complete your treatment. The further along you are, the bigger the set back, as a rule. Eat foods that won’t break your braces. BROKEN BRACES ARE THE SECOND MOST COMMON REASON FOR TREATMENT RUNNING LONG.
I have given you an estimated time frame to wear your braces. That estimate is based upon an average time frame we see the majority o similar types of cases finish. As the world would have it, not many things speed up treatment, but many things slow treatment down. Most are under your control. Poor oral hygiene, poor elastic wear, appliance breakage (broken/loose braces) and missed appointments all increase your time in braces. Doing all these things well decreases your time in braces.
We have observed a pattern to broken braces over our years in practice. First of all, most patients (85%) don’t break any braces at all. The most common broken bracket is the lower second bicuspid, the tooth in front of the lower first molar. We use a particularly robust design for this bracket. Chewing pressures increase as they progress towards the back of the mouth, that is why we use the rings or bands around most molar teeth. If you break a lower second bicuspid bracket we will replace it with a band to help avoid further breakage.
Remember, if you follow the rules and “don’t eat that stuff”, you finish in the least amount of time, then you can eat all those foods as much as you want, with a beautiful smile and long lasting bite!
