How does Invisalign work??

Invisalign patients typically are given three sets of aligners at each orthodontic visit. They wear each aligner for about two weeks. Primarily, they should be removed only to eat, drink, brush and floss. As each aligner is replaced with the next in the series, your teeth gradually will move week by week until they have straightened into the final virtual ClinCheck position that you and Dr. Chapman agreed upon before treatment began. You'll visit our office about once every six weeks for a check-up to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages between 9 and 18 months. Invisalign patients wear between 10 and 30 aligners during their treatment, but both of these figures will vary from patient to patient.

Why should I choose Invisalign?

Invisalign can give you the smile you've always dreamed of because the treatment is:

  • Invisible, so no one can tell you are undergoing orthodontic treatment to straighten your teeth. That means you can smile with more confidence during treatment, as well as after.
  • Removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Removable aligners also make brushing and flossing a breeze.
  • Comfortable, because the aligners have no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. Without brackets and wires, you will spend less time in our office getting adjustments for broken brackets and bent or broken wires.
Sports Friendly, so you can play contact sports without braces and wires hurting the inside of your mouth if someone or something hits your face.

Invisalign’s technology also enables you to view your individual virtual treatment plan when you start so you can see how your teeth will look once you have completed treatment.

Can’t we just stick with our family dentist
for Invisalign treatment?

It is possible that your family general dentist has attended some additional weekend training seminars to become certified as an Invisalign provider. Your general dentist is obliged to assume professional dental care for all of his patients. General dentists know what they are appropriately skilled to do and you can trust your general dentist to do what he or she does well and refer you to a specialist for treatment beyond his or her scope of training. Orthodontists are dentists that have completed at least an additional two years of all-encompassing, full-time, specialized university training. They handle the simplest and the most complicated orthodontic problems, which general dentists often are not qualified to treat.

How long does Invisalign treatment take to complete?

Multiple factors play into determining how long Invisalign treatment takes for each patient. Typically, it takes about 9 to 18 months, but during that entire time, most people will not even notice that you are under treatment. Technological advancements continue to make treatment faster, easier and more comfortable for the patient. Invisalign aligners are used to straighten your teeth gradually, not overnight, so be patient with the treatment. Remember that any discomfort you feel will be brief. On the other hand, your beautiful, healthy smile will last forever.

Do I need to wear a retainer after treatment?

An important part of maintaining the excellent results gained from Invisalign treatment is wearing a retainer once treatment is complete. This important step keeps the teeth stable after the active orthodontic tooth movement treatment is done. Without retainers, your teeth would return to their crooked old ways. Keeping your teeth in their ideal position for the rest of your life means wearing occasionally for the rest of your life. The ideal retainer is one made of clear, plastic material that snugly fits over your teeth and can be worn while you are sleeping and when you are at home. It would look similar to your Invisalign aligner, but would be made from a harder material. Think of your retainers as a cheap form of insurance. If you lose one, it is a lot more economical to have it replaced immediately than to repeat orthodontic treatment. If you lose your retainer and don’t have it replaced, you eventually could lose all of the beneficial improvements you gained during your Invisalign treatment.
