The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child first visit an orthodontist by age seven.
Dr. Chapman loves to meet 7 year olds! Many orthodontic problems can be solved more easily at a younger age, before jaw growth slows, to avoid the need for more complicated procedures. Phase I Orthodontic treatment is best started at about age 9. Growth is at maximum velocity for both girls and boys allowing for more rapid and larger corrections to be made, if necessary. Orthopedic/orthodontic appliances used during this period of growth can greatly enhance the quality and longevity of the final result. Periodontal problems can be avoided, removal of permanent teeth is not necessary in most cases, treatment is often shorter in duration. Dr Chapman uses a couple of very cool orthopedic/orthodontic appliances called the Penguin Appliance and the T-Rex Appliance depending upon the patient’s needs. Both were developed almost 20 years ago in his long time study club, the ORMCO Insiders, a group of 125 of the best orthodontists from around the world. Phase I treatment can be comfortable, fast and effective. Average time in braces is 13 months, after eruption of all permanent teeth, following the use of one of these appliances at age 9.
